The fight for observance of Sabbath is assuming serious proportions here and has necessitated the intervention of Rabbi Kook, Chief Rabbi of Palestine.
A resolution demanding observance of the Sabbath in Tel Aviv was unanimously passed at a special mass meeting attended by several thousand persons. All speakers deplored the present apparent trend in the city towards non-observance of the Sabbath.
Rabbi Meir Berlin, one of the principal speakers, pointed out that the petty Sabbath violations which were overlooked a few years ago were the cause of more extensive desecration today.
I. Rokeach, vice-mayor of Tel Aviv, pointed out that Jews who come to Palestine do not wish to see taxis flying through the streets of the city on the Sabbath. Nor do they desire to see the celebration of Sylvester Day (New Years) in Tel Aviv.
Chief Rabbi Kook, addressing the meeting, referred to the Talmud and exhorted those who are building the country also to build a nation.
