A school which children are eager to attend is the play school being conducted this summer at the Federation Settlement, 115 East 106th Street. Health, happiness and helpfulness are being stressed in the curriculum, according to Miss Matilda Dreifus, its director, who said yesterday that informality is the keynote of all the activity.
The settlement is an affiliate of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies. The school’s teachers, four of whom are supplied by the Board of Education, foster a spirit of camaraderie. “It it a mutual adventure for teachers and children,” said Miss Dreifus. The curricular material originates in the experience and interests of the pupils.
The capacity of the school is limited to 160 boys and girls, ranging in age from 5 to 12 years. Every Friday the entire group is taken into the country for a picnic. On frequent occasions the children visit museums and parks and put on their own entertainments. A hot lunch is served daily at noon and milk just before the pupils leave for the day at 4:30. Regular gymnasium periods contribute to the physical progress of the children.
