Children ruled Jerusalem today where Purim, the Feast of Esther, was traditionally celebrated a day later than elsewhere. Thousands of children and youths, ranging from kindergarten pupils to high school and trade school students, marched and presented pageants in streets lined by masses of people.
The Purim parade took three hours to pass the reviewing stand where members of the Cabinet, the diplomatic corps and leading Israeli personalities applauded.
The youth band of the City of Haifa, the Tel Aviv Hapoel, religious and sports groups and a police troupe enlivened the proceedings and provided a carnival air. Mobile and donkey-drawn Goats depicted scenes and caricatured current events. The United Nations drew its quota of digs while other floats lampooned oil moguls, Nasser of Egypt and Uncle Sam. One float depicted King Saud of Saudi Arabia with harem and slave market.
