A $25,000 check for construction of a non-sectarian children’s nursing home in England named for Dr. Chaim Weizmann was presented to the British War Relief Society by the Jewish Section of the Interfaith Committee for Aid to the Democracies today at a luncheon at the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria.
Dr. Weizmann asserted in an address: “We stand or fall by the victory and–God forbid–the defeat of England. To England defeat would mean enslavement, but there would always be an England which would free itself from enslavement. To us it would mean obliteration.”
Other speakers included Robert R. Appleby, vice-president of the British War Relief Society; Dr. Israel Goldstein, chairman of the Jewish Section, who presided, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, who made the presentation to Appleby; Sir Angus Fletcher, director of the British Library of Indormation, and Frederick Johnson, deputy director-general of the British Purchasing Commission.
The nursing home is the second to be financed by the Jewish Section, the first having been named for General Archibald P. Wavell. The $25,000 included $10,000 from the Esco Fund Committee, whose chairmen is Mrs. Frank Cohen.
