A group of 110 prominent leftist intellectuals published a statement in Chile’s major newspapers today urging workers, teachers and students to reject the current provocations threatening the existence of Israel and calling for direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab states.
Similar measures were called for at a mass meeting sponsored by the Chilean Committee for Friendship with Israel where resolutions were adopted calling on the Great Powers to refrain from intervening in the Middle East conflict and urging them to halt the shipment of arms to Middle East countries. The gathering also called on the Chilean Government to support at the United Nations General Assembly measures aimed at ensuring a permanent peace settlement.
