While a major international parlay–the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)–was underway here, the Chilean Parliament and press paid warm tribute yesterday to Israel on the 24th anniversary of its independence.
The government newspaper “La Nacion” published an editorial praising Israel and carried an eight-page color magazine supplement depicting life in Israel and that country’s development over the past quarter century. The morning newspapers “Mercurio” and “La Prensa” each devoted two pages to articles on Israel.
The Chilean Chamber of Deputies, at a special session, paid tribute to democracy and progress in Israel. The Senate held a similar session today. Israel’s Ambassador Moshe Tov and his wife, were hosts last night at a gala Independence Day reception at the Israel Embassy. Leading figures of Chile’s government, politics and the arts attended.
