There are possibilities that the more than 10,000 Jewish refugees stranded in Shanghai could be absorbed into the Chinese economy, but ## is doubtful that the Jews would care to remain in the Far East, Tuang Mien Lu, Chinese delegate to the Preparatory Commission for the International Refugee Organization, told Lewis Neikrug, European director of the HIAS.
Mr. Lu, who is also director of the Chinese Relief and Rehabilitation administration, indicated that more than half the refugees were ready for an immediate departure and they would leave as soon as visas and transportation are available since few are employed or involved in the country’s economy in any other ##. He discussed the shortage of available shipping and the negotiations for the immigration of the Jews.
