Establishment of a National Christian Committee to enlist all Americans in support of the United Jewish Appeal was announced today by Henry Morgenthau, Jr., general chairman, at a press conference. Mr. Morgenthau said that Rep. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., will serve as national chairman of the newly created Committee.
Mr. Roosevelt, who participated with Mr. Morgenthau in the press conference, said that he welcomed the opportunity “to help rally Americans of all faiths behind the United Jewish Appeal,” adding that he could conceive of “no greater act of Christian brotherhood than helping in the task of rescuing and rehabilitating the hundreds of thousands of Jews who were left homeless and destitute as a result of World War IL.”
Mr. Morgenthau pointed out that the Jews of the United States recognize that they have a special responsibility in meeting, through the U.J.A., needs in Israel, Europe, North Africa and the United States totalling $272,455,800 in 1950. He expressed the hope, however, that “the deep interest which all Americans have in our world-wide human reconstruction program and the development of Israel” will be reflected in active participation of Americans of all faiths in the forthcoming campaign of the United Jewish Appeal.
