Hungarian churches, which have been compelled by the pro-Nazi government to cease baptizing Jews in order to save them from deportation, issued a statement today protesting against “methods of solving the Jewish problem which would challenge God’s eternal laws.
Information reaching here says that, at the same time, the church authorities succeeded in obtaining some concessions for Jews who have already been baptized. They are now empowered to raise any grievances with the government through the Council of Christian Jews which has been established as a sub-division of the central Jewish council. They are also permitted to wear a “Christian sign” next to the yellow stars.
Meanwhile, seizure of Jewish property and arrests of Jews seeking to escape and those aiding them to do so continue. The German Transkontinent Press reports that in the city of Sopron “much hidden Jewish property, including cash, gold and silver worth millions” has been discovered. In the town of Cluj. Jewish safe deposit boxes were opened and “many millions in gold and foreign exchange were confiscated.”
