Resistance to anti-Semitism as a movement threatening American democracy and organized religion has been urged by the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America and by the Church Peace Union.
The Federal Council’s weekly Information Service, in an issue devoted to “Current Manifestations of Organized Anti-Semitism,” warns that “we have here and now among us a group of skillful propagandists and fanatics who are a potential threat to democracy and to religion.” A four-point program is urged, including (1) revealing the relation of anti-Semitic propaganda to Nazi methods, (2) “careful, positive education,” (3) promotion of economic justice and (4) action by Christian churches to influence the attitudes of their members against anti-Semitism.
The Peace Union, in its June News Letter, publishes a resolution adopted earlier in the month in Atlantic City opposing anti-Semitism as “contrary to our American institutions” and threatening “the basic ideals of all religions.” It urges “all religious leaders and the people of their respective congregations to take active steps toward the development of that understanding, cooperation and goodwill which will unite them more deeply in overcoming this evil with good.”
