Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill told Israel in a special message to memorial services for the late Dr. Chaim Weizmann, that she could rely on Britain to do everything possible to contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Middle East. His message was read by Earl Jowitt to an audience of 4,000 prominent persons, including cabinet ministers, members of the Knesset, members of the diplomatic corps, Maj. Gen. E.L. M. Burns, UN truce chief and representatives of minority groups and tourists.
Sir Winston said that he and Dr. Weizmann had been “friends for many years and I always admired his patience and resolute resistance to violence and extremism. Israel, which his vision and tenacity did so much to create, is still confronted by many difficulties, but it can rely on us to do all we can to contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Middle East.”
Premier Moshe Sharett, addressing the meeting, which also marked issuance of the Balfour Declaration in 1917, described the way of life of Israel’s first president as a statesman, scientist and Jew and his prolonged struggle for a Jewish National Homeland.
