A Church of England clergyman contended here today that “latent anti-Semitism” affected the judgment of Christian churches which remained silent during the weeks before June 5, 1967 “when the Arabs were threatening in speeches, broadcasts and even precise Army orders to kill every Jew they could in Israel.” Dr. James W. Parkes, a historian and pioneer in scholarship on relations between Judaism and Christianity, made his remarks at a meeting of Christian and Jewish scholars sponsored by the American Jewish Committee and the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
Dr. Parkes stressed the need for continuous dialogue between Christians and Jews. But he said it “will only become creative, and really help the world to understand itself and its needs when it is a dialogue without any qualification between equals.” He also called for an increased dialogue by informed scholars and other authorities who would explore the problems of peace between Israel and her Arab neighbors more objectively than has been possible in the course of heated debates between Arabs and Jews.
