Notwithstanding Israel’s rejection of a special citation awarded it by The Churchman magazine, Dr. Guy Emery Shipler, editor, said today, “The Churchman will give a special citation to the new state of Israel as originally planned because the paper has long stood for the Jewish aspirations in Palestine. It will continue to give its support to an independent Israel.”
The citation will be awarded at the publication’s annual dinner next week by Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam of the New York area of the Methodist Church. A statement issued earlier by Major Aubrey Eban, Israeli representative to the United Nations, explained that the citation was declined following reports of “controversy” about the dinner and because the state of Israel does not wish to become involved “in domestic controversial matters.”
