A bitter attack on the slowness of the City administration in using the $25,000,000 allocation for slum clearance was embodied in a reply by Joseph Platzker, secretary of the East Side Chamber of Commerce, to a letter from B. Charney Vladeck, member of the New York City Housing Authority, in which Mr. Vladeck tendered his resignation from the Chamber.
Mr. Vladeck resigned from the body following an attack on the Fusion administration at a meeting of the Chamber Wednesday evening.
DENIES SEEKING DISPUTE
“I seek no quarrels, nor do I want to create any needless issues,” declared Mr Platzker in his letter. “I want to see red tape cut and work begun. Since early this year $25,000,000 of Federal housing funds have been begging for allocation. Workers in the building trades by the hundreds, long on city relief rolls, would find happy means of livelihood again and a great impetus be given to business-even on Lower East Side.
“When I took upon myself personally to study, report on and chart financial and physical conditions of all structures in thirty square blocks on Lower East Side. I worked seven days a week and long hours each day-all in an honest hope that it would help speed new housing.
PLEADS FOR ‘SQUARE DEAL’
“I will still fight for better housing on Lower East Side, although I resigned from the two slum clearance committees.
“No one doubts your integrity, Mr. Vladeck, nor your honesty,” Mr. Platzker concluded. “We want a square deal for Lower East Side and want to see things move while Federal funds are begging for allocation.”
