The bill providing for civil marriages, which had the support of many Jewish leaders, was killed in the House of Delegates of the Maryland Legislature by being laid on the table.

Daniel C. Joseph, one of the Jewish members of the Legislature, in defense of the bill, said that Maryland is the only state in the Union which does not permit civil marriages. Letters from prominent clergymen indorsing the measure were read.
