Lord Attlee, the former Clement Attlee, leader of the Labor Party between 1936 and 1951 and Prime Minister from 1945 to 1951, died here last night, aged 84.
Attlee’s leadership of the government covered the years just prior to and after the establishment of the modern State of Israel. It was under his premiership that the late Ernest Bevin, as Secretary for Foreign Affairs, made determined attempts to liquidate the Jewish national home, instituted a drive against the Palestinian Jewish settlement’s defense organization, the Haganah, arrested leaders of the Jewish Agency and returned Jewish concentration camp survivors to Germany. Attlee not only condoned but actively supported all those moves.
