The Cleveland Jewish Welfare Fund Appeal for 1956 concluded this week-end with the announcement that it had exceeded the quota set for this year’s campaign and had set a new record for fund-raising in the Federation’s 26-year history. A total of $4,825,540 was raised for the regular UJA campaign and the special UJA survival fund campaign, it was announced. This exceeded the quota by $4,000 and topped the previous banner year of 1948 by $14,000. It was nearly $800,000 more than the Federation raised last year.
Maurice Saltzman and William M. Shipley were co-chairmen of the successful campaign. Max Simon is president of the Federation and Henry L. Zucker is executive director. The leaders of the Federation and of the campaign received the following telegram of congratulations from William Rosenwald, general chairman of the U. J. A; “All of us in UJA join in sending heartfelt congratulations to you and your associates, and to every volunteer campaigner and contributor, for Cleveland’s inspiring accomplishment. As the first major city to exceed its historic 1948 total, Cleveland has taken the leadership in carrying out American Jewry’s most pressing responsibility in a decade–the-safeguarding of Jewish lives and freedom overseas in a time of gravest emergency.”
