Religious and secular leaders of the Cleveland Jewish community joined in a presentation on civil rights before the Board of Education, urging creative steps to combat de facto segregation in the public schools.
As a result, the School Board suggested further consultations on the problem with representatives of the Greater Cleveland Conference on Religion and Race, the only time in the hearings that school board officials made such a suggestion. The Jewish Community Federation and the newly established Cleveland Board of Rabbis joined with the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland and the Cleveland Area Church Federation, the central Protestant organization, in the presentation this week.
Rabbi Alan S. Green presented the Jewish viewpoint, with Father Edward J. Camile giving the Catholic stand and Rev. B.B. Whittemore speaking for the Protestants. All three also appeared as representatives of the Conference on Religion and Race.
