The American Jewish Tercentenary celebration opened here officially with a ceremony at City Hall at which Mayor Anthony J. Celebrezze issued a proclamation urging all citizens of the city “to join with the Jewish community in appropriate public ceremonies and to participate in all other ways in the observance of this great anniversary.”
Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver opened the City Council meeting, which prececed the issuance of the proclamation, with a prayer. Irving Kane, chairman of the Cleveland committee of the tercentenary celebration, accepted the proclamation and presented the mayor with a tercentenary medal.
