The sum of $25,000 was pledged last night by the leading members of the clothing industry and allied trades toward the $1,250,000 fund which the United Jewish Appeal is endeavoring to raise in Greater New York for the relief of German Jews, at a dinner held at the Metropolis Club, 105 West Fifty-seventh Street. One hundred prominent members of the industry attended and were guests of Charles D. Jaffee, chairman of the clothing division.
Following the dinner, Mr. Jaffee announced that an intensive drive will be conducted in every branch of New York’s clothing industry. Committees have already been set up, he said, in various sections. A large part of the quota of $25,000 has already been obtained, he announced.
Speakers at the dinner included Dr. Henry Moskowitz, who has just returned from a trip to Europe and Palestine, William Rosenwald, national co-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal ,and I. Edwin Gold-wasser, co-chairman of the Greater New York campaign.
Mr. Rosenwald in his address gave a brief resume of the status of the Jews of Europe.
“There are still a half-million Jews in Germany,” he said, “who have withstood the terrific economic, social and psychological pressure the last two years and who are threatened today with further indignities and oppression, who despite all this are maintaining their dignity There are 3,000,000 Jews in Poland and a third of these are actually starving.
