Dr. Gerson Cohen, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) and president of its faculty since 1972, told the JTS board of directors today he planned to resign and asked the board to name his successor.
The Chancellor, who participated strongly in a ten-year fight to permit women to be enrolled as candidates in the JTS abbinical School, said he was resigning for health reasons. The first class of women at the rabbinical school will begin its second year in September.
Dr. Cohen said he believed his health no longer permitted him “to give the job the 125 percent effort” it deserves. He said he plans to remain at the JTS as a faculty member.
