Col. Franz von Papen, storm center of the current German political crisis, will remain a member of the Reich cabinet, it was officially stated tonight. He will retain his post as Vice Chancellor under terms and conditions not disclosed.
Von Papen had been slated to go. In fact, it had been felt up to this evening that he was as good as out of office and that Prussian Premier Hermann Goering was to all intents and purposes his successor. Von Papen, it was believed, after the deaths in the week-end Hitler “housecleaning” of many of his friends and associates, was anxious to leave the cabinet.
