The Nazis’ relentless “cold pogrom” against the German Jews is being steadily heightened in intensity and extended in scope, Wallace R. Deuel, Berlin correspondent of the Daily News, reports in a dispatch to that newspaper.
Whether physical violence against the Jews will recur in the near future is still an open question, he advises, adding that this possibility now seems unlikely.
“There is no doubt, however, that the policy of making it impossible for Jews to live in Germany is gaining force every day,” Deuel’s dispatch asserts.
“If the present policy continues virtually all of the people which produced Mondelssohn, Heine and Einstein in Germany will either be driven out of the country or be forced back into the degradation of the medieval ghetto.
YOUTHS ARE CHIEF TARGET
“The tendency of the present policy is to make it impossible for Jewish youth to find a place in German society. Jews are still tolerated to a certain extent in limited fields, but even these opportunities are being denied to the younger generation. When the older Jews die out therefore, Jewish influence in Germany will cease to exist.
“In the sphere of business there is less oppression than in the so-called ‘cultural’ fields. The Jew may be a ‘factory leader,’ for example, and Jewish department stores have been allowed to continue in business—partly because to close them would be to cast thousands of Aryans out of work. Even Jews in business, however, are subjected to the merciless unofficial ‘cold pogrom’ which makes life almost impossible for many of them.
“A ‘notice to our readers,’ published by Der Stuermer, anti-Semitic newspaper of Julius Streicher, is typical of one kind of harassment which is being used to exterminate the Jews:
“‘As long as the Jews are allowed to be guests in our country there will be cases of relation between Jews and Aryans leading to race contamination,’ says this notice. ‘Der Stuermer considers that its chief task is to make all cases of this kind known to the public. We ask all our readers to inform us of any such cases which come to their attention.’
“Deliberate anti-Semitic measures of the government are having their greatest effect in closing one vocation after another to Jews. This program is receiving its greatest support from Joseph Goebbels, minister of propaganda and people’s enlightenment.”
