Mount Holyoke College notified the B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundations this weekend that compulsory church attendance at the college was discontinued in November, 1959 “and no one is now compelled to attend. ” The information was transmitted by Deane W. Ferm, Dean of the Chapel of the South Hadley, Mass., college to the Foundations which had reported last November that Jewish students were required to attend church services.
Dr. Alfred Jospe. Hillel director of program and resources, informed the Dean that “our information about this practice had been based on letters from parents and similar sources which had come to us repeatedly during the past few years. ” Dr. Jospe added that the Foundations had not known the practice had been ended when it made the statement and that it was now distributing “an appropriate statement of correction immediately. “
