Pelham St. George Bissell 3rd, a Columbia University senior, denied that he is an anti-Semite or that he is connected with any anti-Semitic organization in an interview printed yesterday in the Spectator, Columbia University student daily. Bissell was charged by John L. Spivak, in an article in the current issue of the New Masses, with being a “special contact man” on the campus for the secret and “patriotic” society of Paul Reveres which the article charges is tied up with Royal Scott Gulden in the spreading of anti-Semitic propaganda and student espionage in the American colleges.
Bissell, the son of Municipal Court Justice Pelham St. George Bissell, made a flat denial of all charges to the Spectator reporter. The editor of the paper, however, was promised “adequate documentary proof” of the accusations by Spivak.
In his article, Spivak charged that Gulden had attended a secret meeting of the Paul Reveres held in Bissell’s home, 270 Park avenue, on March twenty-ninth of this year. Though Bissell laughs at this charge, Spivak claims to have a stenographic report on the proceedings of that meeting.
