Columbia University has declined to be represented at the Goettingen University bicentenary celebration, and instead has sent a letter subtly condemning racial persecution in the Third Reich.
An English letter accompanying a formal Latin greeting to the university lauded the “absence of race and religious prejudice and persecution” in old Germany and expressed the hope that this would “quickly return.”
The letter, signed by President Nicholas Murray Butler, coming while Columbia’s intention of staying away from the German celebration was made known unofficially, indicated a marked change in attitude since Columbia sent a delegate to the Heidelberg celebration last year and Dr. Butler justified this action in his annual report.
