A chair for the study of the Yiddish language, literature and culture will be established for the first time at Columbia University, it was announced here today. The decision to create the chair was taken recently at a meeting of the University’s faculty council. Studies will begin in September, 1952.
The Yiddish chair will be maintained jointly by Columbia University and the Atran Foundation and will bear the name of the foundation’s president, Frank Atran. Mr. Atran, a noted philanthropist whose interests include the Jewish Labor Committee, of which he is vice-chairman, and Mr. Sinai Hospital of New York, said: “I hope that the chair for Yiddish language, literature and culture which lately has been so sadly neglected.”
