The total tonnage of Israel’s merchant marine is now 100,000 tons, Bar-Kochba Meyerovitz, director of the Israel-American Shipping Line, revealed today. He also announced that his firm has recently acquired two 10,500-ton cargo vessels — to be named the S.S. Tel Aviv and the S.S. Jaffa — which will soon fly the Israeli flag.
During the first year of its existence, Mr. Meyerovitz continued, the Government of Israel spent $36,000,000 in freight and passage charges, with only 25 percent of that sum going to Israeli shipping, The development of the Jewish state’s shipping industry, he emphasized, will moan considerable savings to the government.
