Commemorations are being held in several Hungarian cities this week to mark the 57th anniversary of the Nazi deportations of the nation’s Jews. Israel’s ambassador to Hungary, Judit Varnai Shorer, attended a memorial service in the northern Hungarian town of Salgotarjan, from where some 2,000 Jews were deported to Auschwitz. Only a handful returned.
