The result of the election for a Central Committee at the Polish Zionist convention is regarded in Zionist circles as a sign that Polish Zionism has taken a decided radical turn, which will make impossible for a long time the union of the Zionists of Congress Poland with those of Eastern and Western Galicia.
The convention adopted a resolution which declares that the economic situation of the Polish Jews is a desperate one and that the pauperization of the Jewish masses is taking on terrible forms. In spite of the fact that the Jewish population is paying a large share of the taxes, the resolution declares, their cultural and religious needs are not being satisfied, and certain Czarist restrictions against the Jews have still not been abolished. At the same time, the resolution declares, world public opinion is getting a different impression of the situation of the Jews in Poland because of the vote of confidence in the government given by the Jewish Parliament Club leaders.
With regard to the Palestine situation, the conference declared that “last year’s Zionist policies created a dangerous situation for the Palestine Yishub and put the Balfour Declaration in doubt. This was proven by the riots and by the declarations of members of the Palestine Zionist Executive on the witness stand before the Inquiry Commission.”
The convention declared itself in favor of calling a special Zionist congress as soon as possible for the purpose of formulating demands upon the Mandatory Power and adopting new working methods. It also criticized the policies of the Brith Shalom.
