An organization for the purpose of bringing relief to the large number of physicians who are now stranded in the various European countries, has been formed. Initiative in the matter has been taken by Dr. A. J. Rongy of 590 West End Avenue, New York City, who recently returned from Europe, where he participated in the meetings of the Jewish World Relief Conference recently held in Carlsbad. Under mandate of this Conference, he is authorized to form an American Physicians’ Committee for the aid of the physician refugees in Europe. Announcement to this effect was made today by Dr. Rongy. The members of the Committee formed are: Drs. Samuel J. Kopetsky, Henry W. Fraunthel, William Linder, Henry Roth, E. W. Friedman, A. Hymanson, N. Ratnoff, E. Altman and I. S. Hirsch.
Many hundreds of physicians, who, on account of political conditions, were compelled to leave Russia, find themselves in great difficulty, owing to legal restrictions which prohibit them from practicing medicine in their present places of residence. As many as 400 physicians living in Germany, France, Czechoslovakia and Austria are compelled to perform menial work, many of them serving as porters, cabmen and manual laborers, Dr. Rongy reported from personal observation.
The fund which will be collected by the American Physicians’ Committee is to be employed to direct these refugee physicians to such countries where they will be permitted to practice their profession and serve the people. Dr. Rongy is chairman of the Committee, Dr. I. W. Held, treasurer, and Dr. A. Saphir, secretary. The Committee will endeavor to raise $25,000.
