A new committee with a special staff to report and recommend methods of correcting racial and religious prejudice was announced by Mayor F. E. LaGuardia yesterday, with Charles Evens Hughes, Jr., formerly Solicitor General of the United States, as chairman.
Composed of nineteen leaders of varying faiths, and including both officials and private citizens, the committee will be privately financed. Mayor LaGuardia said he hoped to make another announcement an this in ten days, but expressed confidence it will obtain funds for two years’ support. He said it would not solicit funds. The Mayor said the committee aimed to promote understanding and mutual respect among all the racial and religious groups in our city.”
Among the prominent Jews who have been named to the new committee are George Z. Medalie, former United States attorney; Edward Lazansky, formerly presiding justice of the Appelate Division and Judge Nathan Perlman of Special Sessions.
