A suggestion that both the United States and the Soviet fleets quit the Mediterranean in the interests of peace in the area was reportedly made by the Yugoslavian delegation at a conference here of the “progressive” (Communist) parties of the Mediterranean nations. The Yugoslavian proposal was rejected by most delegates who regard the presence of a Soviet fleet in the Mediterranean as a “safeguard to peace.”
