The Sephardic Jewish communities in the southern parts of ugo-Slavia, South Serbia and Serbian Macedonia, which have until now been practically isolated from the rest of the Jewish world, are being linked up with the more advanced and organised Jewry of Jugo-Slavia, following a conference of Jewish leaders from Belgrade, Zagrb South Serbia and Serbian Macedonia, which has just been held at Skopje.
A number of resolutions were adopted aiming at the improvement of the economic, cultural and political position of the Jews of Southern Serbia and Serbian Macedonia. The Jews of these districts are extremely Orthodox. To a certain extent they still live in Ghettos.
Louis M. Singer of Toronto, has been elected third vice-president of District Grand Lodge No. 1 of the Independent Order B’nai Brith.
Mr. Singer’s election is the first occasion upon which a Canadian member has been chosen for this office. He has served as president of the Toronto lodge and as president of the conference of Canadian lodges for two years.
Israel S. Chipkin, Educational Director of the Jewish Education Association and Jacob Wener, Chairman of the Committee of One Hundred of the Association were the guests of honor at a banquet tendered by the Committee. The occasion was the departure for Europe and Palestine by Mr. Chipkin and Mr. Wener.
Israel Unterberg, president of the Jewish Education Association, was toastmaster.
The contract for the erection of the Jewish Hospital Nurses’ Home, St. Louis, Mo., to be known as the Moses Shoenberg Memorial, established by the widow and heirs of the late Moses Shoenberg, with a fund of $300,000 was awarded to the Selden-Breck Construction Company. Ground for the building has already been prepared and the work of construction will begin at once. The building will have accommodations for 200 student nurses and space for classrooms and laboratories of the school of instruction.
A political office of the Poale Zion World Federation has been opened in London under the charge of Mr. Dov Hos, one of the leaders of Palestine Labor. The office will keep in touch with British labor in connection with the developments in Palestine.
Possibility that the nominees of both major parties for Governor of New York State will be Jewish is being widely discussed. Republicans will almost certainly nominate Albert Ottinger, Attorney General, it is pointed out. Supreme Court Justice Joseph M. Proskauer of New York City is being prominently mentioned as Democratic nomince.
