Efforts are being made to re-establish the Haifa-Trieste shipping service formerly maintained by the first all-Jewish liner, Tel Aviv, which ceased operation last month because of competition of foreign lines.
So little preference was accorded the Tel Aviv that the Jewish enterprise was finally forced to give way to competitors, although 1,250,000 tons of merchandise were imported last year, mainly by Jews, and 7,000,000 cases of citrus fruit shipped abroad by Jews.
A similar situation prevailed in the passenger service, with the Tel Aviv not getting enough passengers to continue service although more than 100,000 immigrants and tourists entered the country at an estimated cost of $10,000,000.
