the panic-stricken Jews of Kovel deserted the streets, barred the doors of their houses and closed their shops.
The Federation of Polish Jews in America has sent a letter to the Polish ambassador in Washington in which the latter is requested to inquire immediately of the Central Government in Warsaw what steps it has taken to restore order in Kovel. In its letter the Federation says:
“One sentence in the dispatch of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency makes us terribly scared that new outrages are to be accepted. It states ‘when a delegation of the Jewish community asked the city government for protection, the Starosta explained he has not enough police to do so. The delegation then left for Luck (Ludz) to ask help from the Voyewoda.’
“It is in the interest of the good name of the Polish Republic as a whole in which we are concerned, and in the Jewish population in Kovel, in particular, when we ask Your Excellency to inquire immediately what steps have been taken in the above-mentioned serious matter by the Central Government in Warsaw.”
