Four prominent Jewish leaders of Tiberias, ancient capital of lower Galilees, will be taken to the government concentration camp at Sarafend, it was learned today. The reason for their impending detention has not been ascertained.
The four are Josef Nachmani, Josef Abulafia, Mordechai Goldzveig and M. Guberman.
The twenty-one hour curfew imposed by the government in Jaffa was lifted except in the Jewish quarters of Florentine and Shapiro.
The British Colonial Office, replying to a memorandum from 137 Arab Government officials, stated that the Government would consider suspension of immigration into Palestine after the country had become quiet.
Replying to expressions of fear of Jewish domination the statement said the Government would not allow domination by any one community. It thanked the Arab officials for “loyal and devoted service.”
The memorandum, submitted July 8, asked the Government to suspend Jewish immigration, as it did during disorders in 1921 and 1929. as the only means to end current disturbances. The officials said their efforts to calm the Arab people were in vain because of popular despair at the Government’s attitude.
The authorities withdrew permission it had granted for a countrywide conference of Arab local strike committees as a result of recent bomb outrages and attacks against Jews.
Meanwhile, sporadic disorders continued in many parts of Palestine.
Two Jews were slightly injured when a bus from Bait Vegan was fired on in Jaffa.
In Jaffa an Arab girl was killed and a man wounded by a bomb thrown from an Arab house into the street.
A boy and a man were injured when an Arab hut in the same city were the targets of a bomb and rifle fire.
Arab bands wounded a British trooper in an attack on the Transjordan Frontier Force post near Tiberias. Other Arab bandits damaged the Iraq Petroleum Company’s pipeline near Kaukab.
Heavy firing occurred near Tel Mond and Kfar Jonah.
Arabs set fire to a Jewish quarry near Jerusalem, a stable at Neve Jacob and a haystack near Petach Tikvah.
