Talks are continuing between the office of Gov. Hugh Carey and James Kelly, acting chancellor of the State University of New York, over the decisions of officials of the State University (SUNY) at Buffalo to hold classes next fall during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, a spokesman for the Governor said. The spokesman emphasized that the Governor has no control over the calendars of the schools of SUNY, which is independent of the state executive but that the Governor was “concerned.”
Jewish students at Buffalo reportedly are protesting the administration’s refusal to cancel classes on the High Holy Days because it is a school policy to be closed on Christmas and Easter, and they consider the school policy discriminatory.
