The Jerusalem sub-committee of the United nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine held its first meeting today with special representatives Michael Comay and Zalman Lifshitz of the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
Comay gave the U.N. group a comprehensive review of the role of Jerusalem in Jewish history, particularly its role in the recent fighting. He followed with is a discussion of the future aspects of the city’s Jewish population and its economic life.
The Israeli representatives, however, refrained from advancing any political suggestions to the sub-committee members or counter proposals to internationalize of the city. The meeting lasted an hour, during which the U.N. officials made no comment on the Israelis’ exposition. The group will hear testimony tomorrow from Mayor Daniel Auster of Jewish Jerusalem.
Yesterday, members of the sub-committee visited the Old City where they interviewed the Arab mayor who told them that Jerusalem must become Arab. A meeting was also held by the body in the American School for Oriental Research where, Arab sources reported, the agenda of the forthcoming Beirut parley of the U.N. body was discussed.
