Conditions in the larger industries in Palestine are improving gradually. The new Customs Tariff has given a considerable impetus to a number of these industries.
Messrs. Karamna Dick and Salty have established a special section in their cigarette factory at Haifa for the manufacture of cigarettes for Transjordan. The capital of the company has been increased to £150,000. The company is affiliated with Maspero Freres, Ltd., the well known cigarette manufacturers of Egypt and Palestine who recently purchased the Matossian concern.
The Matzoth factory of the Grands Moulins de Palestine resumed work in the first week of November, and is preparing unleavened bread for export.
The “Shemen” Oil Factory has increased the number of workers engaged in the factory owing to the increasing demand for its produce since the institution of the new customs tariff.
The Palestine Cement Company “Nesher,” Ltd., have acquired a large motor boat capable of transporting 300 tons of cement. This boat is destined to transport local cement to Syria and Cyprus. The price of local cement has risen by 200 mills per ton since November 4.
About two hundred workers are engaged on the Jordan works under the Rutenberg plan. Though the number of laborers engaged in industry has increased, the conditions of the labor market continue to be very unfavorable in the Jaffa and Haifa Districts and it is feared that the number of unemployed will increase in the winter.
