What is characterized as the “most important meeting ever held in America” for the discussion of the Palestine question will be held on January 25th, when Jewish leaders will meet at the Hotel Astor to plan the first independent campaign in America of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, it was announced today. Invitations to the conference have already been sent out.
The leaders sponsoring the conference include Felix M. Warburg, Judge Julian W. Mack, Dr. Cyrus Adler, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Dr. Lee K. Frankel, Robert Szold, Dr. Solomon Lowenstein, Louis Lipsky, Judge Horace Stern, Morris Rothenberg, and Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver.
It is understood that the recent situation in Zionism will be one of the major topics on the agenda of the conference, and it is intended that American Jewry’s answer to the Passfield White Paper, which aroused worldwide protest because of its announcement of a new British policy in Palestine, shall be the sending of substantial sums to carry on the work of upbuilding the Jewish National Home.
Until now, the campaigns of the Jewish Agency, the body equally representative of Zionists and non-Zionists which was organized in Switzerland in August 1929 as the official instrument for the building of the Jewish National Home in Palestine have been held in American together with the campaigns of the Joint Distribution Committee.
Due to the present unusual economic factors, the two bodies have decided to conduct separate campaigns in 1931. The January conference will mark the beginning of the first campaign for Palestine to be held exclusively under the auspices of the Jewish Agency. The aim of the conference is to organize American Jewry for this campaign. The quota for the drive will be set at the conference.
