A group of Mexican and other Latin American and European intellectuals met here this weekend on the plight of Soviet Jews. They agreed the plight could be alleviated by permitting emigration to Israel and guaranteeing the civil rights of those Jews who choose to remain in the USSR. The conferees stressed that they had no political motivation or anti-Soviet intent. The Jewish Central Committee here, which was not a participant in the conference, reported receiving many cables from Russian Jews in Kishinev, Moscow and other cities protesting “Zionist provocation.” The Committee said the wording of the cables was almost identical, indicating that they were sent under pressure from Soviet authorities.
