A conference to consider the problem of discrimination in American colleges and means of eliminating it was addressed here this week-end by Dr. Robert M. Hutchins, Chancellor of the University of Chicago, and Dr. Andrew C. Ivy, University of Illinois official. The conference was sponsored by the American Council on Education with the cooperation of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defumation League.
Dr. Ivy, who was chairman of the conference, which was attended by 175 educators, declared that there is no justification for either public or private non-church-related institutions to select or exclude students on the basis of membership in a particular racial, religious or ethnic group. Dr. Butchins insisted that discrimination must be "cleaned up" in American schools before the United States can appeal to other nations of the world in the name of democracy.
