Plans for promoting greater interest in Jewish communal work were discussed here today at the 56th annual meeting of the National Conference of Jewish Communal Service which is being attended by more than 1,000 Jewish social workers from all parts of the country.
A report on the professional status of Jewish community services on which tens of millions of dollars are being spent annually in hundreds of Jewish communities throughout the United States was presented by Maurice Bernstein, executive director of the United Jewish Fund of Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Judah Pilch, of New York, executive director of the American Association for Jewish Education, was elected president of the National Conference for the next year, succeeding Philip Bernstein, associate director of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds in New York.
Addressing the opening session last night, Dr. Abraham A. Neuman, president of Dropsie College, said that “the momentum of our major campaigns with which the maintenance and the functioning of our local community institutions are also involved, will for some time to come be supplied by the critical situation in Israel. ” He pointed out that “American Jewry cannot and will not let Israel down. “
