The possible effects of the recently-established National War Fund, Inc., and other war chest developments on the 1943 Spring campaigns for local, national and overseas Jewish needs were analyzed by Jewish welfare leaders from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas, at the ninth annual conference of the Southeastern Region of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, held at the St. Charles Hotel here from February 20 to 22.

The sentiment prevailing at the three-day conclave was for the “vigorous and early prosecution” of Jewish federation and welfare fund 1943 Spring campaigns for all Jewish needs regardless of the outcome of negotiations leading toward war chest affiliation. Speakers pointed out that the National War Fund, Inc., which was established to unify all war-related appeals into one national drive, would not go into effect until the Fall of 1943 when funds would be raised for 1944.

Jewish communities in the region which have already completed their annual Spring drives reported favorable results, bolstering the conference’s viewpoint that funds would be available to meet the Jewish community’s local, national and overseas obligations. The meeting gave careful consideration also to the likely effects of the new tax program on Jewish fund-raising campaigns in 1943. The conference adopted a resolution urging greater cooperation among local welfare fund budget committees with a view toward improving budgetary practices for regional Jewish institutions.
