The policy committee of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany today ratified the recommendations for Federal German restitution and in demnification legislation worked out by the Conference and German teams at the first stage of The Hague talks. The committee, which includes representatives of all 23 organizations affiliated with the Conference, met in camera, under the chairmanship of Dr. Nahum Goldmann.
The policy committee expressed disappointment over the Bonn Government’s failure to approve this legislative program, which was completed and agreed to last April. In addition, the committee authorized the Conference praesidium to conclude an agreement with the Germans subject to final ratification by the policy committee.
Dr. Goldmann, reviewing developments in the reparations negotiations, said that the progress of the talks had “fully vindicated” the wisdom of the decision to negotiate directly with Germany. “Although no agreement has yet been reached at The Hague,” he declared, “there is every reason to believe that such an agreement will be signed in the near future.”
