The Senate and House of Representatives late today approved a conference report on an agriculture supplementary appropriations bill, containing a soft version of the prohibition on further shipments of surplus agricultural commodities to Egypt.
The version finally approved by the Congress was a Senate modification of a House amendment which would have prohibited further food aid to Egypt. The Senate language allows the President to make a determination on the matter if he feels that further food aid shipments are “in the national interest.” The bill now approved applies only to the balance of a current U.S.-Egypt agreement, and covers an unshipped amount of commodities valued at $37,000,000.
