A resolution to provide $100,000 in operating expenses to a committee created by the House to investigate tax-exempt foundations, including groups concerned with minority problems, has been referred to the House Administration Committee for study. The resolution was introduced by Rep. E. E. Cox, of Georgia, who has been named chairman of the new committee.
The amount requested is considered exceedingly large for a temporary committee and compares with amounts allocated to some standing committees. Members of Congress have warned that the probe, which seeks to uncover subversive activities, may investigate such groups as the B’nai B’rith and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as well as institutions like the Rosenwald, Guggenheim, and Rockefeller foundations.
