Recommending that the United States demonstrate support of the permanence of Israel by moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the capital, Rep. Seymour Halpern, New York Republican, today warned against appeasement that might encourage the Arabs to resist a peace settlement.
In a House speech, the congressman said, “the time has come when our Government should forget about currying favor with the Arabs. Instead, we should take leadership in the community of nations to insist on a settlement that will not leave the way open for further threats to Israel and to world peace.”
Governor George Romney of Michigan said today that any plan for “lasting stability” in Mideast must include border realignments, free access to Akaba Gulf and Suez Canal, and Arab acceptance of Israel as a nation. He said any peace must include “the recognition and acceptance of Israel by the Arab states as a permanent part of the Mideast community and a corresponding willingness of Israel to play a useful role within the community.”
