Simultaneously with the memorial meeting held yesterday afternoon at the Zionist Congress to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the death of Dr. Theodor Herzl, founder of political Zionism, memorial prayers were held and tributes paid to the prominent Zionists and Non-Zionist leadersof the Jewish Agency who have died since the last Congress.
Among those for whom memorial prayers were said were Nathan and Lina Straus, Louis Topkis and Louis Marshall, all Americans, Lord Melchett and Leon Reich. Nahum Sokolow, chairman of the Zionist Executive paid a special tribute to Mr. Marshall, who was one of the fathers of the Jewish Agency.
The memorial meeting for Dr. Herzl took on added solemnity since the Congress is being held in the same city where Dr. Herzl convened the first Congress in 1897. Mr. Sokolow and Dr. Leon Motzkin, chairman of the Congress presidium, delivered lengthy addresses lauding the achievements and character of Dr. Herzl who died in Vienna on July 5, 1904. During the memorial meeting all of the veteran Zionists who were Dr. Herzl’s collaborators were seated on the tribune. The sum of $20,000 was raised at the meeting. Salman Schocken of Germany giving $15,000.
